Corns and calluses
are thickened layers of skin that develop as a result of repeated friction, pressure, or irritation. They are the body’s way of protecting underlying tissues from injury.
Corns
- Appearance: Small, round, and hardened areas of skin with a dense core.
- Location: Typically form on the tops and sides of toes or between toes.
- Cause: Ill-fitting shoes, abnormal walking patterns, or repetitive friction.
Calluses
- Appearance: Larger, rough, and thickened patches of skin.
- Location: Often develop on the soles of feet, palms, or other areas that experience frequent pressure.
- Cause: Walking barefoot, frequent use of tools, or pressure from activities like weightlifting.
Treatment & Prevention
- Proper Footwear – Wear well-fitting, cushioned shoes to reduce friction.
- Padding – Use corn pads or cushioned insoles.
- Moisturizing – Keep skin hydrated to prevent excessive thickening.
- Soaking & Exfoliation – Regularly soak feet and gently file down thickened skin.
- Avoid Pressure – Modify activities or use gloves if calluses form on hands.
- Medical Treatment – If painful, infected, or persistent, consult a doctor or podiatrist.
